My new Orca at Sea quilt pattern is a modern take on the traditional storm at sea and snail trail quilt blocks. By choosing an array of natural ocean colors placed on a batik watercolor background in a cool grey, it has the feel of the vast ocean waters, topped off with the majestic Orca breaching the water. The spiraling pinwheel effect created by these two blocks blended together gives a mesmerizing sense of movement across the quilt.

Storm at Sea and Snail Trail Quilt Blocks
The Storm at Sea and Snail Trail quilt blocks are a bit more challenging than most of the blocks in my patterns. If you are fairly new to quilting you can make this quilt if you are confident with rotary cutting and can sew an accurate quarter-inch seam. I caution everyone to take your time, cut, and sew accurately, followed by, measure, measure, measure at every step, you’ll be thrilled with the results if you do! Share your work on Instagram with #orcaatsea, @northern_threads. I enjoy viewing what you do with my designs.
Orca at Sea Laser Cut Kits
I’ve assembled a project kit for Orca at Sea to make it easy for you to get sewing on your own version of the quilt. Yes, if you haven’t already guessed it’s all made from my favorite, yummy batik watercolor fabrics. I hope you like it as much as we do here at Northern Threads. Please remember to share your comments below, I would like to know what you think of this version of Storm at Sea and Snail Trail quilt blocks. I value your feedback on all my projects.
Orca at Sea Pattern
Orca at Sea quilt pattern designed by Marie Noah combines traditional piecing with fusible applique. I’ve written the instructions with full-color diagrams to make it simple for you to follow along. You have the option to make Storm at Sea and Snail Trail Quilt Blocks by traditional piecing or I have provided templates for paper piecing if you prefer the no-risk accuracy method. You have 2 sizes to choose from, however, it would be very easy to alter the finished size larger or smaller to suit your needs by adding or removing more blocks or even an additional border.

If you’re in the Fairbanks area, stop in a see all the quilts on display. There’s loads of eye candy everywhere!
Amazing colors and design!!!! Definitely on my want list!
Tammy; Thank you for your kind words, it means a lot!
Love the orca quilt….wish it came in a smaller size for a wall hanging.
Pearl, You could purchase the fat pack and individual cuts of yardage in smaller amounts from our store. We used batik watercolors Wade, February, and Parakeet.
I already have so many UFO projects to finish, but I can hardly resist your beautiful patterns. When I retire, I hope to have the time to make up my collection of your patterns. I had the opportunity to visit Fairbanks just once and hope I get to go back again some day. Thank you for your wonderful art work.
Sherry; I don’t know how far away retirement is for you, maybe soon, so your fun times can begin. It’s wonderful to hear my patterns are part of that plan. Happy quilting!
I bought the kit and the extra fat quarter set to enlarge the kit, however it doesn’t include the background fabric. How did you envision this to be finished? Also, I’m not sure there is the extra 1/2 yard for the star points either.
Regina;
I emailed you the details about the supplies you need to make the quilt larger.
WOW! This is definitely on my wish list!! Beautiful! Do you have a price for the queen sized kit? Or is it only in kit form for twin size? Thanks!
Rosanna
Rosanna, I’m happy to hear you like the quilt. The details on how to make the kit into a queen sized quilt is located here: https://www.northernthreads.net/shop/Kits/Northern-Threads-Laser-Cut-Kits/p/Orca-at-Sea-Laser-Cut-Quilt-Kit-x32440052.htm
Oh my goodness Marie! This quilt is stunning! I’m not a huge fan of wildlife type quilts. However, I love this one.
Thank you! So glad you like it. If the orca is not your thing, you can make the quilt and leave the applique off.
After looking at the picture of the quilt, it looks as though there isn’t a pieced block under the orca Applique. Is there enough extra fabric to piece one?
Regina, Yes there is enough fabric to complete the last block.
I am just cutting out Orca at sea and need a little help on the colour code. When it’s says assorted next to a blue square does it mean assorted blues or assorted any colour?
It means assorted any color.
I am interested in your pattern, orcas at sea. Could you tell me does the pattern include foundation paper piecing templates that can be printed on foundation paper? Also is this available as a digital download? Thank you so much.
Yes, you get a master template which you will need to make copies of. As of right now, no digital download is available.
